Born Alanis Nadine Morissette, 1 June, 1974, in Ottawa, Canada, AM is a Canadian-American alternative rock singer-songwriter, guitarist, record producer, and actress. She began her career in Canada, releasing two commercially successful dance-pop albums, Alanis (1991) and Now Is the Time (1992) for MCA Records Canada. She then travelled to L.A. and met producer Glen Ballard, with whom she created what would become Jagged Little Pill (1995). This was a huge success and sold more than 33m copies globally. To date, Morissette has sold more than 60m albums worldwide. She is known for her powerful and emotive mezzo-soprano voice. She has been dubbed by Rolling Stone as the "Queen of alt-rock angst”.
